Mount Kilimanjaro & Climbing Routes
Mount Kilimanjaro situated in Kilimanjaro National Park Tanzania, Is the top highest peak in Africa and the world tallest freestanding mountain. Kilimanjaro is the most accessible tallest mountain that anyone can climb since does not require any technical method to conquer the summit. Reaching to the peak you can cross various vegetation zones from tropical, savannah, alpine moorland, desert, snowfield to glacier.
Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing Routes
Marangu Route named "Coca cola route" is the easiest route on Mount Kilimanjaro. Its ascension profile is very gradual and steady, allowing for painless trekking for most of the way. Also it offers sleeping huts for accommodation on the mountain.
Machame Route is known as "Whiskey Route" comparing to Marangu route the "Coca Cola Route". Machame is a more difficult route and does not have sleeping huts for accommodation. Machame is the second most popular route on Kilimanjaro Mountain.
Rongai Route is only route that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north near Kenyan border. Rongai ascent is similar to Marangu though it lacks sleeping huts. It is one of Kilimanjaro easier route. Climbing to the top is gradual and steady. However unlike Marangu the Rongai route has low crowds and passes through remote area.
Lemosho Route is another climbing route on Mount Kilimanjaro that approaches from west. It is a difficult and long route, but is favored by most climbing outfitters due to its smaller crowds, scenic variety and high success rates.
Shira Route is a difficult route that begins to the west at Shira Gate. The uniqueness of Shira is that the first section of the trail is not hiked but rather driven. Therefore the climbers using Shira miss out the hiking up one of Kilimanjaro ecological zones the rain forest.
Umbwe Route is the least used, least crowded route on Kilimanjaro. Also it is one of the difficult route on the mountain since it is steep, constant and straight climb to the top.
Northern Circuit Route
Northern Circuit Route is also climbing route on Kilimanjaro. This is a unique itinerary since it is only route that visits northern slopes while traversing around nearly the entire mountain. Also it is the longest route on the mountain, in distance and time making it a more difficult route. However it offers good acclimatization which makes the highest success rate.
